Tarpons At A Glance

Coach Tom Massolio has turned tiny Punta Gorda into Southwest Florida’s “Capital of Basketball,” with 485 victories, 10 district championships and only two losing seasons during a 24-year span – including a magical run to the 6A Final Four last spring. Charlotte must replace Mr. Basketball runner-up Tre Carroll (now at Florida Atlantic), but will remain a force locally behind high-potential recruits 6-6 JR John Gamble (9.8 ppg, 2.9 rpg, 2.5 apg) and 6-4 SOPH Chris Cornish, along with a pair of quality guards, 6-1 SR D.J. Woods (7.7 ppg) and 6-0 SR Jordany Reyes-Sanchez (2.8 ppg, 2.7 apg). Woods calmly drained five 3-pointers to spark the Tarpons’ 59-56 upset of No. 1-ranked East Lake in the 6A-Region 3 final.
