Purple Eagles At A Glance
Coach Steve Turner’s team won its third championship in five years in the WCAC – likely the toughest league in America – beating St. John’s 60-56 at American University (its 17th win in 18 games), behind 20 points from 6-7 SR All-Met forward Terrance Williams (17.8 ppg, 7.3 rpg) and could be poised for a national breakout in 2019-20, posing a major threat to the co-No. 1 seeds (Montverde & IMG) at the City of Palms. The WCAC title capped a three-week stretch that also included league victories over national powers DeMatha, Paul VI and Bishop O’Connell. The Purple Eagles are extremely balanced, with 6-7 SR Myles Stute (9 ppg, 6 rpg, 2 apg) and 6-4 JR Malcolm Dread to go with returning guards 6-3 SR Chuck Harris and 5-9 SOPH Devin Dinkins, and often play a globetrotting schedule – Gonzaga faced teams from seven different states and D.C., and journeyed to the HoopHall Classic (Mass.), Cancer Research Classic (WVa.), Slam Dunk to the Beach (Del.) and Alhambra Classic (Md.). Turner is entering his 16th year at Gonzaga.
