Fightin' Planets At A Glance

Mars (pop. 1,699), located 24 miles north of downtown Pittsburgh, graduated 12 players from the 2015-16 Class 3A state runners-up, but was still the last WPIAL team standing in Class 5A in 2016-17. Head coach Rob Carmody’s son, 6-4 SR Robby Carmody (26.2 ppg, 12.7 rpg, 4.8 apg) returned from an ankle injury and erupted for 45 points in a 72-61 win over Erie Cathedral Prep and shot 65 percent from the field for the season, but the Planets fell to Meadville 53-46 in the state quarterfinals. With 1,456 career points, the younger Carmody had already broken the school’s scoring record set by John Castello in 2016, but he began the 2017-18 by averaging 38.7 ppg through Mars’ first three games. The Planets are ranked No. 1 in WPIAL-Class 5A by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
