Spartans At A Glance

You won’t find a more well-organized high school basketball program from top to bottom, so it’s little surprise that Bucky McMillan’s Spartans have played in four state championship games over a five-year span, winning consecutive Class 6A state titles in 2013 and ’14 (before a seventh classification was added). First-team MaxPreps Sophomore All-American 6-8 JR Trendon Watford provides the star power, averaging 23.0 points, 9.9 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game as a 10th-grader and exploding for 26 points and 11 boards in Mountain Brook’s 63-43 rout of Auburn in the 7A state final. The roster is stacked with sneaky-good talents like 6-2 SR Sean Elmore (12.8 ppg, 5 rpg), who had 17 points and five 3-pointers in the title game and, McMillan says, is “one of those guys who can’t stand to lose.”
