Yellow Jackets At A Glance

Bartow’s fifth state championship since 1958 and its second under Coach Terrence McGriff wasn’t shocking, but how the Jackets did it in a stirring 66-61 OT victory over Fort Lauderdale Dillard should yield huge dividends. Sure, there is a bonafide star in 6-3 SR Walter Clayton (15.4 ppg, 4.3 rpg, 4.3 apg, 2.3 spg), but five returning teammates averaged at least 4 points – 5-8 SR Tyrone Smith (8.7 ppg, 2.2 rpg, 2.2 apg), 5-11 SR Alex Vigo (7.4 ppg, 2.3 rpg), 6-2 SR Amarion Frazier (7.3 ppg, 2.6 rpg), 6-5 SR Daithan Davis and 5-8 JR Jordy Lowery – and transfers 5-11 SR Malcolm Dewberry (Avon Park) and 6-0 SOPH Kjei Parker (13 ppg at Lakeland Kathleen) will contribute. McGriff has quietly built one of Florida’s best programs in a town of only 19,926 people – the other 11 finalists in Classes 2A-7A came from locales that averaged 317,486 – presiding over nine district titles and five Final Four trips since 2009.
