It happened again.
For the third straight year and the 13th time overall, a Culligan City of Palms Classic alum has won the McDonald’s All American Boys Game MVP. This year, it was Cole Anthony of Oak Hill Academy (Mouth of Wilson, Virginia) coming away with the honors after his all-around performance.
The son of former UNLV star and NBA mainstay Greg Anthony scored 14 points, dished seven assists and grabbed five rebounds to lead the East to a 115-100 victory in Atlanta. It was reminiscent of his work in the last two City of Palms Classics, the first of which he took part in as a member of Archbishop Molloy (Briarwood, New York).
The 6-foot-3 point guard is No. 2 among seniors on the ESPN recruiting index, and his impending college choice has been a continuing source of intrigue. He recently eliminated Miami and Wake Forest from his consideration, leaving Georgetown, North Carolina, Notre Dame and Oregon as contenders for his services.
If he picks the Tar Heels, he’d follow in the footsteps of Nassir Little, Justin Jackson and James McAdoo, all of whom played in the City of Palms, won the McDonald’s MVP and went to UNC. Little, who was at the City of Palms in 2017 with Orlando Christian Prep, was last year’s McDonald’s MVP.
Michael Porter came to the City of Palms in 2015 with Father Tolton (Columbia, Missouri) and captured the 2017 McDonald’s MVP, starting the current streak of City of Palms alums winning the award.
The other McDonald’s MVPs who’ve played in the City of Palms are Jahlil Okafor, Shabazz Muhammad, Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, Tyreke Evans, Michael Beasley, Kenny Gregory, Shaheen Holloway and Felipe Lopez.
