McEachern’s Sharife Cooper wins the USA Today All-USA Boys Basketball Player of the Year

The USA Today All-USA Boys Basketball Player of the Year won’t be attending college next year.

Instead, he’ll be back in high school, because the award winner is junior Sharife Cooper of City of Palms champ McEachern (Powder Springs, Georgia). The quick 6-foot point guard put up eye-popping numbers, averaging 28.6 points, 8.7 assists, six rebounds and 4.1 steals a game for the 32-0 Indians, who won the school’s first state championship.

Cooper told USA Today his best off-court moment of the season was the visit to Fort Myers for the Culligan City of Palms Classic, saying he and his teammates had a lot of fun on the trip. They seemed to have a lot of fun on the court, too, winning their four City of Palms games by an average of 18 points.

His selection is somewhat surprising despite his personal and team success, since he’s not a particularly highly rated recruit; ESPN ranks him only 21st among juniors. Still, he’s a game-changing force on the high school level whose ability to disrupt opponents deserves recognition, and it’s not as if colleges aren’t interested. He has offers from more than a dozen power conference programs, including Kentucky and Final Four participant Auburn.

If he chooses Auburn, he could reunite with McEachern teammate Isaac Okoro, whom USA Today named to its All-USA Georgia Boys Basketball First Team. USA Today also handed out hardware to McEachern coach Mike Thompson, the All-USA National Coach of the Year.

Plenty of other City of Palms alums got the nod for the national All-USA Boys Basketball teams. ESPN’s top two in the recruiting rankings for the class of 2019 — James Wiseman of Memphis East (Tennessee) and Cole Anthony of Oak Hill Academy (Mouth of Wilson, Virginia) — made the first team.

The second team features 2017 City of Palms champ Vernon Carey of University School (Fort Lauderdale) and Trendon Watford of Mountain Brook (Alabama). On the third team are Joe Girard III of Glens Falls (New York) and Josh Green of IMG Academy (Bradenton).
