Monarchs At A Glance

Gary McKnight, beginning his 37th season at Mater Dei, became the first California high school coach to reach 1,000 wins in 2014 and the Monarchs have won a record 11 state titles and 22 Southern Section crowns. They quickly re-emerged last season as a championship contender, thanks to a strong class led by 6-1 SR guard Spencer Freedman (15 ppg, 5.9 apg), 6-10 SR forward Michael Wang (10.3 ppg, 6.2 rpg) and 6-4 SR Harrison Butler, coupled with the midseason arrival of popular 7-2 transfer Bol Bol (17.5 ppg, 9.1 rpg), the son of late NBA star Manute Bol. The summer brought another addition in 6-4 JR P.J. Fuller (15.4 ppg, 2.2 rpg, 2.2 apg), a coveted transfer from Seattle Nathan Hale, but both Bol and Fuller have since departed. Mater Dei lost to Bishop Montgomery in both the Southern Section Open Division and CIF Open Division southern regional finals, 70-55 at the Honda Center and 60-53 at the Pyramid (Long Beach). Bol had 26 points, on 13-of-15 shooting, in one of three victories over San Diego St. Augustine.
